My dear Ogu,

I was a little surprised by your last letter, but I have done as you wished. Even Tonic was surprised by your decision. He said, ‘This is what comes of living in a city and not knowing what the rest of India is like,’ or words to that effect. I think that Tonic, as usual, exaggerated. It is true, however, that you have led so far, in Calcutta and Delhi, a comfortable big-city life, wherein your friends and lifestyle have been largely westernized. When we had last met I had said that your job was going to be an immensely enriching experience. By that I had meant your exposure to a different kind of environment. Madna must have placed your Delhi and Calcutta in perspective, it must have. The same happened with me when I was in the Konkan, forty years ago. But I suppose my reactions were different from yours. After Presidency College the Konkan was a wonderful surprise. But here I repeat myself. I said all this to you when you last came to Calcutta. At this moment Madna might seem dull to you and life perhaps unsettling, but do not decide to leave your job for only this reason. Ogu, do not choose the soft option just because it is the soft option, one cannot fulfil oneself by doing so. Yet it is also true that it is your life, and the decisions will have to be yours. No more homilies. Try and meet Tonic early, so that when I telephone Pultu next, you can tell me how the meeting went.
